Leigh on Sea Probus Club Lunches


Lunch with the Ladies on Tuesday 21 May 2024


Date  Tuesday 21 May  2024

Time: 12.00 for 12.30 pm, 

Venue:  Maplin Suite, Saxon Hall, Aviation Way, Southend-on-Sea,

Cost: £25.00 per person, payment preferably by bank transfer.

Menu: Honey and mustard roasted gammon followed by knickerbocker glory, tea or coffee.  Other dietary options are, for the main course, plain chicken, grilled white fish, or grilled salmon, and for the dessert, ice cream, Fresh fruit salad, or Cheese and biscuits.

Speaker:  Gary Jones will speak about Intensive care nursing,

Please advise the Treasurer, Graham Orchard, by email at gro.1968@talktalk.net whether or not you will be attending the lunch.


If you are bringing a guest, please state: 

1.  the name of your guest,

2.  whether you and/or your guest will require an alternative menu option, 

3.  other attendees you wish to be seated with.

A reminder will be emailed to members about two weeks before the lunch. The deadline for response is by midday on the Friday immediately preceding the lunch. Last-minute changes can be accepted up to Sunday evening 17, May, but members are reminded that if they cancel after this, they will be required to pay for their meal if it is too late to change the order with Saxon Hall.  In emergencies, Graham can be contacted by phone on 01702 475237 or by text on 07503 181145.

Mark Lewis gave a talk entitled “The Lighthouses And Light vessels of the Essex Coast”.  It included exploring the history, people, events and human stories associated with the church lights, daymarks, the 'screwpile' lighthouses, at Gunfleet, Maplin Sands and Canvey Island, the lights of Harwich and the many light vessels that guarded the entrance  to the River Thames.

Brian Carline. author, broadcaster and after dinner speaker spoke about the Days of Dolly Blue and Izal is a talk about humorous nostalgia - growing up in a large industrial city in the 40s and 50s. It focused on street life in those times and how children occupied their time. The presentation involved both humour and poignancy.

The speaker at our Ladies’ Lunch in January was Linda Catling.  Linda is a Leigh resident and is well known in the area for her handmade and creative postbox toppers on Marine Parade. These toppers often commemorate national and international events. For example 'Remembrance Day’

Linda has been described as “Leigh’s Banksy" 


The speaker in November 2022 was Grahame Harris, Station Manager at NCI Canvey Island.   


"The objective of the National Coastwatch Institute (NCI) is to assist in the protection and preservation of life at sea and along the UK coastline. It is a voluntary organisation and registered charity providing a visual watch along the UK’s  coasts. It is not to be confused with HM Coastguard”.
